Students explain why people founded colonies for religious freedom or profit. They compare education, work, and religion across the three colonial regions. They also describe colonial life from several viewpoints.

Students can match founding reasons and features to New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern colonies. They use specific evidence to explain how daily life differed by region and social position.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think all colonies had the same economy, schools, and religious practices. They may assume every colonist came for freedom or that enslaved and indentured people had the same status.

How to Assess It

Give students an exit ticket: Compare two colonial regions by naming one founding reason and two differences in education, economy, or religion.
