What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read or listen to short accounts about people from American history. They identify key events, actions, challenges, and contributions from each person’s life.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can name a person studied and give two accurate facts about that person’s life. The student can explain why the person is remembered.

Common Misconceptions

Students may mix up people, time periods, or accomplishments. They may treat illustrations or legends as proven facts. Some think one person caused a major change without help from others.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose one person we studied. Draw one important event from that person’s life and write why it mattered.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs picture, event, and contribution cards to match, then place the matched sets on a simple classroom timeline.

  2. Ask, “Which person faced a difficult problem, and what did that person do?” Students draw and write one supporting fact.

  3. Play Who Am I using three clue cards about each person, then have students name the person and explain their choice.

  4. Show coins, stamps, monuments, or street names featuring historical figures, and discuss why communities choose to remember them.
