What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare a historical figure’s daily life with their own. They identify similarities and differences in food, clothing, homes, travel, communication, and play.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students name at least one accurate similarity and one accurate difference. They use details from a read-aloud, picture, or artifact to support each comparison.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think everything from long ago was completely different or that all historical figures lived during the same period. They may confuse objects shown in pictures or guess without using evidence.
How to Assess It
- Show one image of a historical figure’s daily life and one present-day image. Ask students to draw and label one similarity and one difference.

Give pairs picture cards of homes, clothing, transportation, and toys to sort into long ago, today, or both.
Read a short biography, then ask students to write: One part of this person’s day was like mine because...
Play a matching game where students pair an object used by a historical figure with its present-day counterpart.
