What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify features of the places where each person or group lived, such as rivers, soil, climate, plants, and settlements. They explain how those features shaped food, shelter, travel, work, or other choices.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can connect a named person or group to a specific place feature and support the connection with a fact. The student can separate the condition from the response, such as a river being the feature and canoe travel being the adaptation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat Muscogee and Cherokee people as one culture or assign both the same homes, foods, and land use. They may call a river or mountain an adaptation instead of explaining a human response. They may also assume geography completely determined people's choices.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Choose one named person or group. Name one environmental feature, explain how it affected life or work, and give one adaptation.”

Ways to Teach It
Use clay, blue yarn, and craft sticks to build a Georgia landscape, then add a labeled figure showing one historically accurate adaptation.
Show an image of a Cherokee river-valley farm and ask, “What features shaped life here, and what evidence supports your answer?”
Play a three-card match using person or group cards, environmental feature cards, and adaptation cards, with students explaining each completed set.
Walk the school grounds, photograph one environmental feature, explain how school routines adapt to it, then compare it with one historical example.
