What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate Cherokee homelands in northern Georgia’s mountain regions and Muscogee homelands across central and southern Georgia. They explain how each group used nearby rivers, forests, animals, clay, and fertile soil.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can shade and label each homeland on a Georgia map. They can connect local resources to farming, fishing, hunting, building homes, making pottery, and traveling.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may place both groups in the same part of Georgia. They may think resources are purchased goods rather than materials found nearby. They may also assume both groups used every resource in exactly the same way.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank Georgia map. Ask them to label both homelands and write one sentence explaining how each group used a local resource.

Build a clay relief map of Georgia, then place Cherokee, Muscogee, river, forest, and farmland labels in the correct areas.
