What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use pictures, maps, and short texts to compare Muscogee and Cherokee life in Georgia. They explain how each nation used local resources and identify achievements such as town governments and the Cherokee syllabary.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify several features of each culture and support their choices with evidence from a source. They explain at least one similarity, one difference, and one accomplishment without treating the nations as identical.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume all Native peoples lived in teepees, wore the same clothing, or followed the same customs. They may also think Muscogee and Cherokee people exist only in the past or confuse Sequoyah with a Muscogee leader.
How to Assess It
- Give students six picture cards showing a home, tool, clothing, work, or achievement. Have them sort the cards by nation and explain two choices aloud or in writing.

Ways to Teach It
Pairs sort labeled source images into Muscogee, Cherokee, or both, then record the clue that supports each choice.
Ask students to write how Georgia’s forests, rivers, and soil shaped one nation’s food, homes, or tools.
Play a clue game where teams identify the nation, cultural feature, or accomplishment described on each card.
Use current tribal nation websites to find one way Muscogee and Cherokee people preserve their languages and traditions today.
