What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find cities, regions, countries, rivers, and landforms connected to the people and nations they study. They use political and physical maps and tell why each place matters.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can label map locations tied to every studied figure. Examples include England, Savannah, north Georgia, Cairo, Atlanta, Plains, and the Muscogee homeland. The student matches each place to the correct person or nation and says why it matters.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat a birthplace as the only place that matters. They may confuse political boundaries with physical features. They may draw Cherokee or Muscogee homelands as one small point instead of a broad region.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank Georgia map. Ask them to label Savannah, Atlanta, Plains, and Cairo, shade Cherokee and Muscogee homeland regions, and write a matching name beside each.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a laminated Georgia map and location cards; students place Savannah, Atlanta, Plains, Cairo, and homeland regions, then check an atlas.
Have students explain why one person can have several important places, using two map locations for Oglethorpe, Robinson, or Carter.
Play map relay by calling a figure or nation while teams place a labeled sticky note on the correct city or region.
Use a Georgia road map to plan a route from school to one historic site, naming counties, cities, rivers, or landforms crossed.
