What Students Need to Do: Students connect each figure’s actions and contributions to the conditions of the period and location where the person lived. They use details such as laws, land, tools, transportation, and local problems to explain why the figure acted as they did.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name a figure, identify a relevant feature of that person’s time or place, and explain the effect using because. The explanation includes a correct detail, not just a date or map label.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat time as a clock reading and place as only a map label. They may assume historical figures had modern laws, roads, phones, or choices. They may name a contribution without explaining how the setting shaped it.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: “Harriet Tubman was born enslaved in Maryland, where slavery was legal. How did that time and place influence her actions?” Students write or dictate one sentence using because.

Lesson moves

Give pairs figure, setting, challenge, and contribution cards, then have them build matching chains and explain one connection.
Ask, “How did Harriet Tubman’s time and place shape what she did?” Students answer with because and one picture clue.
Play Time, Place, or Both: read a fact, and students hold up the matching label before naming its effect.
