What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect a historical figure’s choices and actions to positive character traits. They name the trait and explain which action shows it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies an accurate trait for a figure and supports it with a specific event. The student explains the connection in a complete sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a trait because a figure was famous rather than use evidence. They may also confuse courage with perseverance or label every helpful action as fairness.
How to Assess It
- Give students one picture or short passage about a studied figure. Ask, “Which trait does this action show, and what detail proves your answer?”

Ways to Teach It

Read a short event and ask, “What trait did the person show, and what choice shows it?”
Play Trait Detective by revealing one action clue at a time while teams identify the trait and figure.
Have students name a school situation where they could use the same trait shown by a studied figure.
