What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect a historical figure’s actions to positive citizenship traits. They name the trait and use a specific action as evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately match several figures with traits they demonstrated. They explain each match using a clear historical example, not just a general compliment.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call every respected person honest or kind without giving evidence. They may confuse a major accomplishment with a citizenship trait or treat similar traits as identical.
How to Assess It
- Ask: “Jackie Robinson kept playing calmly despite insults from others. Which citizenship trait did he show, and what action proves it?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs figure cards, action cards, and trait cards, then have them build and explain accurate three-card matches.
Ask students to write: “Which citizen trait did Mary Musgrove show through her work, and what evidence supports your answer?”
Play trait charades using honesty, patience, compassion, civility, and good sportsmanship, then connect each trait to a studied figure.
Create a class citizenship board linking school actions, such as returning lost items or waiting calmly, to traits shown by historical figures.
