What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify honesty, patriotism, courtesy, respect, pride, and self-control in familiar actions. They describe what a person did and explain which trait the action shows.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a picture or short scenario, a student names the matching trait and points to evidence in the action. The student also gives an original example from school, home, or the community.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse pride with bragging, or patriotism with simply seeing a flag. They may label any kind act as respect without explaining why, and confuse self-control with never having strong feelings.
How to Assess It
- Give students three picture cards: returning a lost crayon, waiting calmly for a turn, and saying thank you. Students label each trait and explain one choice aloud.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs sort action picture cards under honesty, patriotism, courtesy, respect, pride, and self-control, then explain one match.
Students draw a response to the prompt, “What should you do if someone drops money, and which trait does that show?”
Play trait charades, with students acting out one trait while classmates name it and cite the action that gave the clue.
Take a school walk to spot courtesy, respect, pride, or self-control, then record one observed action on a class chart.
