Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify actions citizens take, including obeying laws, paying taxes, voting, serving on juries, and helping their communities. They explain how each action supports government or protects other people’s rights.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name several responsibilities and explain why each one matters. They can distinguish required duties, such as jury service when summoned, from voluntary actions, such as voting or volunteering.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat rights and responsibilities as the same thing. They may also think voting is legally required, or that only adults have responsibilities to their communities.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Choose two citizen responsibilities. For each, state one action and explain how it supports the community or protects rights.

Lesson moves

Sort cards showing voting, jury service, paying taxes, obeying laws, and volunteering, then attach a reason to each choice.
Write a response to: Which citizen responsibility does the most to protect other people’s rights, and why?
Play scenario charades where students act out a civic responsibility and classmates name it and explain its effect.
Examine a sample ballot and jury summons, then mark what each asks citizens to do and why.
