What Students Need to Do: Students identify key Georgia figures, tell what each person did, and explain why it mattered. They connect each person’s choices to the time and place in which that person lived.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a name, picture, or short passage, a student can identify the figure and state an accurate contribution. The student can explain how Georgia or the historical period shaped that person’s actions.
Common Misconceptions: Students may mix up Tomochichi and Mary Musgrove, or credit Oglethorpe alone with founding Georgia. They may name a job, such as baseball player or president, without explaining the person’s impact. They may also place every figure in the same time period.
How to Assess It: Use this exit ticket: “Choose one Georgia historical figure. Write what the person did, why it mattered, and one fact about the time or place.”

Lesson moves

Give groups figure cards, contribution cards, dates, and Georgia map locations to match, then have them explain each completed set.
Ask students to write: “Which Georgia figure made the biggest difference, and what facts support your choice?”
Play a clue game where students identify a figure from three facts, then earn a point by naming the person’s contribution.
Connect each figure to a Georgia place, such as the King Center or Carter’s Plains home, using photos and a state map.
