Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students explain why Georgians split between Patriot and Loyalist sides. They connect key people, battles, and political actions to Georgia’s role in the Revolution.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students use specific evidence to explain Georgia’s early reluctance and later Patriot involvement. They accurately connect Kettle Creek, the Siege of Savannah, key leaders, and Georgia’s Declaration signers to outcomes.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume all Georgians supported independence or that Georgia joined the resistance as quickly as other colonies. They may confuse the Patriot victory at Kettle Creek with the failed American and French attack at Savannah.
How to Assess It: Ask students to explain how one person and one battle shaped Georgia’s Revolutionary experience. Require two accurate facts and one cause-and-effect connection.

Lesson moves

Give pairs event, person, and place cards to sort on a Georgia map and connect with labeled cause-and-effect arrows.
Ask students to write which mattered more in Georgia, Patriot leadership or military victories, using two named examples.
Run a clue-matching relay with Kettle Creek, Savannah, Nancy Hart, Austin Dabney, Elijah Clarke, and the three Declaration signers.
Have students compare a current Georgia historic-site page with a textbook account and identify which Revolutionary story each emphasizes.
