What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain the purpose of each section and sort key ideas into the correct section. They also name Button Gwinnett, Lyman Hall, and George Walton as Georgia’s signers.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can label a short excerpt as an introduction, complaint, or formal statement of separation and explain the choice. The student can correctly identify all three Georgia signers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat every section as a list of complaints or confuse the opening principles with the final break from Britain. They may also include famous national figures, such as Thomas Jefferson, among Georgia’s signers.
How to Assess It
- Give students three short excerpts, one from each section, and ask them to label each and explain its purpose. Then ask them to list Georgia’s three signers.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs excerpt cards to sort under introduction, grievances, and separation, then have them underline evidence that supports each choice.
Ask students to write which section most strongly justifies independence and support their answer with one specific idea from the document.
Play a three-corner review game where students move to the section label matching each excerpt read aloud.
Have students compare the document’s complaints and conclusion with a formal complaint letter that requests change and states a final decision.
