What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the purpose of the preamble, bill of rights, articles, and amendments. They explain how Georgia’s constitution works under the authority of the United States Constitution.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can label a constitutional excerpt and explain its function. They can compare the two constitutions and explain why Georgia law cannot conflict with federal law.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse articles with amendments or treat the preamble as a list of enforceable laws. Some think Georgia’s constitution can override the United States Constitution within state borders.
How to Assess It
- Give students four short excerpts and ask them to label each section. Then ask, “What happens if a Georgia constitutional rule conflicts with the United States Constitution?”
