What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain that Thomas Jefferson drafted the document, then the committee and Continental Congress reviewed and changed it. They connect its stated rights and grievances to the decision to separate from British rule.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can describe the writing process, name Jefferson, and explain why Congress approved the document. They can use a specific grievance to show how colonists responded to abuse of power.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Jefferson wrote and approved the final version alone. They may confuse the declaration with the Constitution or believe it immediately ended the war and granted equal rights to everyone.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to answer: Who helped create the document, why was it written, and how did one grievance show abuse of power?
