What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain what each person or group did and how those actions affected the Revolution. They connect leaders, messengers, writers, soldiers, and British authority to major events and results.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can match each figure or group to an accurate action, then explain its effect. The student can also compare Patriot, British, and Black military roles without treating everyone as supporting the same side.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Paul Revere acted alone, Benjamin Franklin was president, or Benedict Arnold supported Britain from the start. They may also assume all Black soldiers fought for one side or that King George III personally created every tax.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket: Choose two individuals and Black regiments, then write one action and one effect for each.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give pairs name, action, and effect cards to match, then have them defend each match with evidence from a short reading.
Ask students to write which person or group most changed the Revolution, using two facts to support their choice.
Play Who Am I by reading three clues while teams identify the figure or group and explain its influence.
Have students compare a Revolutionary messenger, military leader, or political writer with someone who holds a similar role in public life today.
