What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students put Lexington and Concord, Saratoga, and Yorktown in chronological order and describe what happened at each. They explain how foreign aid, leadership, determination, distance, and supply problems shaped the outcome.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify Lexington and Concord as the opening fighting, Saratoga as a turning point, and Yorktown as the final major battle. The student connects French support and British supply problems to the American victory.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Saratoga ended the war or that Yorktown immediately created a peace treaty. They may also treat Lexington and Concord as separate wars. Some assume the Americans won without French money, troops, weapons, and ships.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Put Lexington and Concord, Saratoga, and Yorktown in order, then explain why each mattered. Add one American advantage and one British problem.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs event cards, map pins, and yarn to build a timeline showing each battle, its location, and its result.
Ask students to write: Why did the victory at Saratoga change American chances of winning the war?
Play a clue-matching game where teams connect each battle with its date, location, outcome, and effect on the war.
Use a map to compare British supply routes across the Atlantic with American routes, then list problems distance created for British forces.
