What Students Need to Do: Students name wisdom, justice, moderation, and courage as the principles named in Georgia’s flag pledge. They explain each principle in plain language.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students recall all four principles without a word bank. They match each principle to an action or example and explain their choice.
Common Misconceptions: Students often list only wisdom, justice, and moderation because those three form Georgia’s state motto. They may confuse moderation with avoiding all conflict rather than showing balance and self-control.
How to Assess It: Give an exit ticket: “List the four principles in Georgia’s flag pledge. Choose one and describe an action that shows it.”

Lesson moves

Give groups four principle cards and eight scenario cards, then have them sort each scenario under the best matching principle.
Ask students to write which principle a good Georgia leader needs most, then defend their answer with one example.
Play a four-corners game by reading a scenario and having students move to the corner labeled with the matching principle.
Have students find one school or community example of each principle and record who acted, what happened, and why it fits.
