Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify the United States flag and the Georgia flag. They use visible details to tell the two flags apart and connect each flag to its place.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly name each flag when shown a picture. They point out details such as stars, stripes, colors, and the Georgia seal.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call both flags the American flag or confuse the Georgia flag with another state flag. They may think stars and stripes appear only on the United States flag.
How to Assess It: Show pictures of both flags and ask, “Which flag represents our country, and which represents our state? Name one detail on each.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs printed flag pieces to assemble, then have students name each completed flag and point to one identifying detail.
Ask students to finish the sentence, “I know this is the Georgia flag because I see...”
Play Flag Sort by having students place picture cards under labels for the United States or Georgia.
Take a school flag walk and record where students see each flag, such as near the office, gym, or entrance.
