Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students recognize “The Star-Spangled Banner” by name. They explain that it is the official song of the United States.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name the song after hearing a short recording or seeing its title. The student can say when people might hear it, such as before a ball game.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse the song with the Pledge of Allegiance. They may think it is any song about the flag. Some call it the national flag instead of the national anthem.
How to Assess It: Play three short song clips. Ask students to point when they hear the national anthem and tell what kind of song it is.

Lesson moves

Make paper microphones, then let students take turns introducing the national anthem before a short recording plays.
Ask, “Where have you heard this song, and what were people doing while it played?”
Play an audio matching game with short clips of the anthem, familiar children’s songs, and instrumental music.
Show a photo of the anthem before a sports event, then have students act out standing quietly and listening.
