What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to short excerpts from My Country 'Tis of Thee and America the Beautiful. They explain how words like freedom, liberty, brotherhood, and pride show care for the United States.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can point to a key word in either song and explain it in simple language. The student can connect the word to an action, such as helping neighbors or respecting shared symbols.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think patriotism means believing the country is perfect or only displaying a flag. They may think freedom means doing anything without rules. They may think brotherhood refers only to boys or family members.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short song excerpt with one key word highlighted. Ask them to draw its meaning and explain how it shows patriotism.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs lyric cards and picture cards, then have them match each lyric word to a picture showing freedom, pride, or brotherhood.
Ask, "How can a song show love for a country?" and record one student example beside each key word.
Play Patriotism Charades: students act out freedom, pride, or brotherhood while classmates name the idea and explain their choice.
Examine a photo of a school flag ceremony, then identify actions that show respect, pride, or belonging.
