Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify the governor as Georgia’s elected state leader. They name Atlanta and the Georgia State Capitol as the city and building where the governor works.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name the current governor and explain that the governor leads Georgia’s executive branch. The student can locate Atlanta on a map and recognize the State Capitol.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse the governor with the mayor or president. They may mix up the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta with the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: “Who is Georgia’s governor, and in what city and building does the governor work?” Ask students to answer in one complete sentence.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a Georgia map, an Atlanta label, and a State Capitol photo, then have them place and label each item.
Ask students to write: “How is the governor’s job different from the mayor’s job?”
Play a matching game with cards showing governor, mayor, president, Atlanta, State Capitol, city hall, and White House.
Show the Georgia State Capitol on an online map, then have students plan a pretend class visit from their town.
