What Students Need to Do

Students trace how bank failures, business closures, job loss, and the Dust Bowl changed daily life. They use examples such as soup kitchens, Hoovervilles, migration, and lost farms. They also explain how specific New Deal programs provided relief, jobs, and economic safeguards.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can build a clear cause-and-effect chain from an economic or environmental event to a family's choices. The student can support an explanation with a photograph, quotation, or data point. The student can name a program such as the CCC, WPA, TVA, or Social Security and explain its intended effect.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat the stock market crash as the only cause and assume every family had the same experience. They may confuse the Dust Bowl with the Depression itself. Some think New Deal programs quickly ended all unemployment, rather than providing help while recovery remained uneven.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Write one cause-and-effect chain showing how either unemployment or the Dust Bowl affected a family. Then name one New Deal program and explain how it addressed one problem in your chain.

   Give groups cards labeled bank failure, job loss, eviction, soup kitchen, CCC, and WPA, then have them build and defend cause-and-response chains.

   Show a Dorothea Lange photograph and ask, "What details reveal hardship, and what help might this family have needed?"

   Run a matching relay with problem cards and New Deal program cards, then require teams to explain each match.
