What Students Need to Do: Students connect Duke Ellington with jazz, Margaret Mitchell with the novel Gone with the Wind, and Jesse Owens with Olympic track. They explain how music, books, and sports shaped public life during the 1930s. They use details from sources to describe each person’s influence.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can identify each figure from a photo, quotation, work, or event and explain the match. The student can describe Ellington’s musical influence, Mitchell’s literary success and Georgia connection, and Owens’s challenge to Nazi racial claims at the 1936 Olympics.
Common Misconceptions: Students may mix up the three fields or assume all three were performers. They may think Owens’s victories ended racism, that Ellington invented jazz, or that Gone with the Wind is a fully accurate history.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: For each name, write the field, one major work or event, and one sentence explaining its 1930s cultural impact.

Lesson moves

Give groups photo, map, book-cover, song, and Olympic-result cards to sort by person, then require one evidence-based explanation for each pile.
Play a short Ellington clip, show a Mitchell cover and Owens race photo, then ask, “How can culture shape hope and identity?”
Run a three-column clue race where teams place contribution cards under Ellington, Mitchell, or Owens and correct one another using source cards.
Students choose a current musician, author, or athlete, then write two sentences comparing that person’s cultural influence with one 1930s figure.
