What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how rationing changed what families could buy and how they used goods. They describe how women and Black Americans took new wartime roles, using Rosie the Riveter and the Tuskegee Airmen as examples.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students connect ration coupons, factory work, and military service to the war effort. They explain that the Tuskegee Airmen served under segregation and that Rosie represented many women entering industrial jobs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think rationing meant goods were free or completely unavailable. They may assume women did not work before the war or that workplace changes were permanent. They may overlook the discrimination Black service members faced while serving their country.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket asking students to explain one effect of rationing and one way either Rosie the Riveter or the Tuskegee Airmen showed changing roles.

Give groups replica ration coupons and grocery cards, then have them plan one week of meals without exceeding coupon limits.
