What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify households, businesses, banks, and government in economic situations. They explain how households provide labor and buy goods, businesses produce goods and services, banks manage money and loans, and government collects taxes and provides public services.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can sort examples into the correct sector and explain each choice. They can trace how money, labor, goods, services, savings, loans, and taxes move among the sectors.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think households only buy things, missing their role in providing labor. They may treat loans as free money or confuse banks with businesses that produce goods. They may see taxes only as money taken away, not as funding for public goods and services.

How to Assess It

Give students four situations: earning wages, making shoes, issuing a loan, and collecting taxes. Have them name the sector and explain its function in each situation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups role cards and play money, then have households buy goods, earn wages, deposit savings, and pay taxes for a classroom road.

  2. Have students answer, “What would happen to a town if its bank closed for one month?” using two specific bank functions.

  3. Play Sector Sort: teams place scenario cards under household, business, bank, or government and earn a point for each correct explanation.

  4. Use a grocery receipt, bank statement, and city budget excerpt to trace how one family's money moves among all four sectors.
