What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how checking accounts handle frequent payments and how savings accounts hold money for later. They also explain that banks lend money, which borrowers repay with interest.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can match common needs, such as paying bills, saving for a bicycle, or buying a house, to the right bank service. They can explain what the bank and customer each do.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think checking accounts only involve paper checks or that savings money cannot be withdrawn. They may also treat loans as free money or confuse interest paid on loans with interest earned on savings.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with three needs: pay a phone bill, save birthday money, and buy a car without enough cash. Students name the best bank service for each and explain why.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs play money and scenario cards to place into checking, savings, or loan folders, then explain each choice.
Ask students to write which bank service they would use for a weekly expense, a future goal, and a large purchase.
Play Bank Service Match, where teams pair customer need cards with checking, savings, or loan cards and earn points for accurate explanations.
Compare sample bank advertisements for checking, savings, and car loans, then identify the purpose, fees, and interest connected to each service.
