What Students Need to Do
- Students gather evidence from investigations, models, and short texts about forces that act without contact. They identify patterns involving distance, mass, charge, magnetic poles, and electric current, then explain their conclusions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can predict whether objects attract or repel and how increasing distance changes force strength. They use data, labeled force arrows, and field models to support explanations about gravity, electric charge, and magnetism.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often think forces require contact, gravity exists only near Earth, or heavier objects always fall faster. They may think every metal is magnetic, magnets have one active pole, or neutral objects cannot respond to charge. Some miss that moving electric charges create magnetic fields.
How to Assess It
- Draw force arrows for Earth and a satellite, two like charges, and opposite magnetic poles. Label each interaction, then state how increasing distance changes force strength.

Ways to Teach It
Use spring scales, charged tape, bar magnets, and compasses at three stations to collect force and distance observations.
