What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students investigate magnetic attraction, repulsion, and which materials magnets attract. They use observations and reliable sources to explain how electric current can produce a magnetic field.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly predict how magnet poles interact and classify tested objects using recorded evidence. They can diagram a simple electromagnet and explain how electricity makes it magnetic.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all metals are magnetic or that every pair of magnet poles attracts. They may think the battery is magnetic instead of recognizing that current in the wire creates a magnetic field.
How to Assess It
- Show a bar magnet diagram and a battery-powered nail electromagnet. Ask students to predict each effect, then justify both predictions with one sentence each.

Ways to Teach It
Wrap insulated wire around an iron nail, connect it briefly to a battery, and count paper clips lifted with different coil numbers.
Write a claim explaining how electricity and magnetism are related, then support it with two observations from the nail electromagnet test.
Sort object and pole-interaction cards into magnetic, nonmagnetic, attract, or repel categories, then check answers with a partner.
Give students a doorbell diagram and have them label where electric current creates magnetism and where magnetic force causes movement.
