S5P2 is a Georgia science standard. These are the elements under it.

Obtain and combine information from multiple sources to explain the difference between naturally occurring electricity (static) and human-harnessed electricity.

Design a complete, simple electric circuit, and explain all necessary components.

Plan and carry out investigations on common materials to determine if they are insulators or conductors of electricity.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare static electricity with electricity moving through a circuit. They build a closed circuit, identify each part, and test materials to classify conductors and insulators. They share claims supported by observations and sources.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can make a bulb light using a battery and wires, then explain why the path must be closed. The student can use test results to classify materials and compare static electricity with current electricity.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think one wire can light a bulb or that electricity is used up by the bulb. They may confuse static charge with current flowing in a circuit. Some assume every metal conducts and every nonmetal insulates without testing.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw and label a circuit that lights a bulb, then explain why a metal paper clip conducts but a rubber band does not.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a battery, bulb, wires, and five classroom objects to build a circuit and test each object for conductivity.
Have students compare a charged balloon and a battery circuit, using two observations to explain how the electricity differs.
Give teams circuit diagram cards to sort into working and nonworking circuits, then require one reason for each choice.
Take apart a flashlight and have students identify the energy source, closed path, conductor, insulator, and device using the electricity.
