Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students use thermometers to compare temperatures and track changes over time. They gather evidence that heat moves from warmer objects or areas to cooler ones, then explain their findings.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students read a thermometer accurately and record temperatures with units. They use observations and data to identify the direction of heat transfer and communicate a clear explanation.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think cold moves into an object rather than heat moving out. They may confuse heat with temperature, reverse the direction of transfer, or read the thermometer scale incorrectly.
How to Assess It: Give students two objects with labeled temperatures, such as water at 40°C and a spoon at 20°C. Ask which way heat will move and why.

Lesson moves

Place metal and plastic spoons in warm water, measure temperature changes, and compare how quickly each spoon warms.
Ask students to write why hot cocoa cools while the surrounding air warms slightly.
Use scenario cards showing two temperatures, then have teams race to point an arrow in the direction heat moves.
Test paper, foil, fabric, and bubble wrap around warm water cups to choose the best material for an insulated lunch container.
