What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students test how vibrating objects make sound and how different materials affect a beam of light. They use observations to explain results and send simple messages with light or sound.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can show that a plucked ruler or rubber band vibrates while making sound. They can test whether light passes through a material, partly passes through, or is blocked. They can use a light or sound pattern to send a message across the room.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think sound comes from the air alone and miss the vibrating object. They may think all materials block light completely, or that a shadow is an object. They may report a result without giving an observation as evidence.

How to Assess It

Ask each student to test one material with a flashlight and pluck one rubber band. On an exit slip, they draw each result and label what the light and rubber band did.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Stretch rubber bands over a tissue box, pluck each band, and record what moves and what is heard.

  2. Students write how a plucked rubber band shows that vibration makes sound, using one observation as evidence.

  3. Play Light Sort by testing clear plastic, wax paper, and cardboard, then placing each item under passes, partly passes, or blocked.

  4. Pairs use flashlight flashes or cup telephone sounds to send a three-part message across the classroom.
