S4P1 is a Georgia science standard. These are the elements under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students test how light travels through, bounces off, bends through, or is blocked by different materials. They use observations and diagrams to explain reflections, refraction, material types, and changes in shadows.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly classify materials as transparent, translucent, or opaque using test results. They can trace reflected light to an eye, show refraction, and predict how moving a light changes a shadow.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think mirrors create light or that eyes send light toward objects. They often confuse transparent with translucent and may think light curves around opaque objects. Some expect a shadow to stay unchanged when the light moves.

How to Assess It

Give students a diagram of a flashlight, mirror, eye, and object. Ask them to draw the light path, classify the object, and predict how its shadow changes when the flashlight moves closer.

   Set up flashlight stations with foil, wax paper, clear plastic, mirrors, and water; students trace paths and record transmission, reflection, or refraction.
