What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students shine a light through different materials and record whether light passes through clearly, partly, or not at all. They use those observations to label each material transparent, translucent, or opaque.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can set up a fair light test, make an organized data table, and classify unfamiliar samples from evidence. The student can explain how each type of material affects passing light.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think transparent means invisible, or that translucent materials block all light because images look blurry. They may classify by color alone, assuming every dark material is opaque.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a flashlight, clear plastic, wax paper, and cardboard. Have students record one observation per sample, classify each, and explain one choice.

Set up flashlight stations with clear plastic, wax paper, cardboard, and foil, then have students record how much light passes through each material.
Ask students which material would make the best bathroom window and have them support their choice with evidence from a light test.
