What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify vibrations as the source of sound and explain how pitch and volume can change. They gather evidence and explain how people send messages with sound or light signals.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can point to the vibrating part of an object and predict how a change will affect its sound. They can describe a sound or light signal, its pattern, and the message it carries.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think sound comes from air rather than a vibrating object. They often confuse pitch with volume or assume a brighter light signal travels faster.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Explain what vibrates when a ruler is plucked, how to make its sound higher, and how three flashlight flashes could carry a message.

Ways to Teach It
Stretch rubber bands of different thicknesses over a box, pluck each one, and record differences in pitch and volume.
Write a claim explaining how changing a ruler's length beyond a desk edge changes the sound, then support it with observations.
Play signal charades by sending assigned messages with drumbeat patterns while classmates decode each pattern using a key.
Compare a school bell, ambulance siren, traffic light, and lighthouse, then identify the message each sends and its intended audience.
