What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose light, sound, or both to create a working signal system. They plan and build a device, define what each signal means, and test whether another person can receive the message from a set distance.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can build a device that sends a clear, repeatable message and explain how the signal carries information. The student tests it at different distances, records message accuracy, and improves the design using evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think making any light or noise counts, even when no message code or receiver is defined. They may confuse signal strength with message accuracy, or assume louder and brighter signals always work better. Some change several design features at once, so they cannot tell which change improved performance.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw a device that could send the messages STOP and GO across the classroom using light or sound. Label the signal code and describe one test of its accuracy.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs flashlights, cups, string, and cardboard; have them build and test a device that sends three agreed messages across the room.
Ask students to write which signal worked best at ten meters and support the claim with test results.
Play Signal Relay: teams use coded flashlight flashes or drumbeats to transmit a hidden three-symbol message, then compare the received message.
Examine a traffic light, school bell, and emergency siren, then identify the message, receiver, and reason each signal works.
