What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and build a closed path using a battery, wires, and a device such as a bulb. They explain how each part helps electric current move through the circuit.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can draw and assemble a circuit that lights a bulb or powers a buzzer. The student can identify the source, conducting path, and load, and explain why a break stops the circuit.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think one wire between a battery and bulb is enough. They may treat a switch as the power source or miss that both battery terminals must connect to the path.
How to Assess It
- Give students a diagram of an incomplete battery-and-bulb circuit. Ask them to add what is missing and label the job of each part.

Ways to Teach It
Build a working circuit with a D-cell, two wires, and a bulb, then remove each part to observe what changes.
Write: Why does a bulb go out when one wire is disconnected, even though the battery still has energy?
Sort circuit diagram cards into complete and incomplete sets, then repair each incomplete diagram with a dry-erase marker.
Open a flashlight, identify its battery, conductors, switch, and bulb, then sketch the closed path electricity follows.
