What Students Need to Do
- Students identify objects that use magnets and tell what the magnet does. They explain that magnetic push or pull helps the object work.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student names an everyday object, such as a refrigerator door or cabinet latch. The student explains where the magnet is and how its force helps.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every metal object is attracted to a magnet. They may also name an object containing a magnet but not explain the magnet's job.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a refrigerator door. Ask students to draw or write how a magnet helps the door stay closed.

Ways to Teach It
Tape a magnet to a craft stick, use it to collect paper clips, then have students explain how the tool works.
Show pictures of a compass, cabinet latch, and refrigerator door, then ask, "What job does the magnet do in each object?"
