What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan a simple test using magnets and classroom objects. They observe, record, and explain which objects are pulled, and when two magnets pull together or push apart.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students make a prediction, test one object or magnet position at a time, and record what happens. They use observations to describe pulling together, pushing apart, or no movement.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think magnets pull every metal object or only work when touching. They may also think any two magnets always pull together, regardless of which ends face.
How to Assess It
- Give each student two magnets, a paper clip, and a plastic cube. Ask them to show and draw three results: pull, push, and no movement.

Ways to Teach It
Set up a test tray with a magnet, paper clip, coin, craft stick, foil, and button for students to predict, test, and sort.
Ask students to draw two magnet tests and complete: “The magnets pulled together when…” and “The magnets pushed apart when…”
Play Magnet Match by having pairs test hidden magnet ends, then earn a point for correctly predicting pull together or push apart.
Test which classroom items a magnetic cabinet latch could hold, then explain why the latch works with some materials but not others.
