Plan and carry out investigations to identify the factors (e.g., distance between objects, magnetic force produced by an electromagnet with varying number of wire turns, varying number or size of dry cells, and varying size of iron core) that affect the strength of electric and magnetic forces.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and run fair tests that change one factor while keeping other conditions the same. They measure how distance or electromagnet design affects force, then explain the pattern using data.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name the changed variable, measured outcome, and controls in an investigation. They collect repeated measurements and use the results to make a clear claim about force strength.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think electric and magnetic forces require contact, or that magnets attract every metal. They may change several variables at once and credit one factor. Some assume distance has no effect or that adding batteries always produces proportional gains.
How to Assess It
- Give pairs a battery, pre-cut insulated wire, an iron nail, and paper clips. Have them test two coil counts for three trials, record the results, and write one evidence-based conclusion.

Ways to Teach It
Build three electromagnets with different coil counts, then compare how many washers each lifts across three trials.
Show force data at four distances and ask, "What pattern do you see, and what evidence supports your claim?"
Run a fair-test card sort where students match each investigation question with its changed variable, measured outcome, and controls.
Study a scrapyard crane diagram, then recommend one change to lift more metal and explain the tradeoff in battery use or heating.
