What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students test how magnets interact with different objects and with each other. They use observations to describe attraction, repulsion, and which materials a magnet pulls.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly identify objects that a magnet attracts and support each claim with test results. They show that opposite poles attract and like poles repel, then explain what they observed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think magnets attract every metal object or all objects nearby. They may also think magnets only pull, missing that two magnets can push apart depending on pole position.

How to Assess It

Give each student two magnets, a paper clip, and a plastic button. Ask them to test each interaction, draw what happened, and label pull, push, or no effect.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up trays with magnets, coins, clips, foil, wood, and plastic, then have students test and chart which objects move.

  2. Ask students to draw two magnets pushing apart and explain, using one sentence, how they know the magnets repel.

  3. Play a predict-and-test game where students sort object cards into attracted or not attracted, then check each prediction with a magnet.

  4. Inspect a magnetic cabinet latch or refrigerator seal, then have students explain how the magnet helps the object work.
