What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and run a fair test comparing how electric charge behaves on conducting and insulating materials. They collect observations and use them to explain where charge spreads or stays localized.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can show that excess charge redistributes across a conductor but remains near the charged area on an insulator. They control variables, record results, and support their claim with evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think conductors create charge or that charge disappears inside them. They may think charge spreads through insulators just as it does through metals. They may also treat attraction as proof of charge, although neutral objects can be attracted through polarization.
How to Assess It
- Give students a metal strip, plastic strip, charged balloon, and electroscope, then ask them to write a three-step investigation comparing charge distribution.

Charge one end of equal foil and plastic strips, then test several locations with an electroscope and map the results.
