Expectations in This Standard
K.NR.4 is a Georgia mathematics standard. These are the expectations under it.
- K.NR.4.1
Identify written numerals 0- 20 and represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).
- K.NR.4.2
Compare two sets of up to 10 objects and identify whether the number of objects in one group is more or less than the other group, using the words “greater than...

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect spoken number names, written numerals, and groups of objects through 20. They decide which of two numbers shows more, fewer, or the same amount.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name and write numerals through 20. They build or draw matching sets and explain which of two quantities has more, fewer, or the same number.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse digits, especially in 12 and 21, or write teen numbers backward. They may compare numeral shapes instead of matching each numeral to a quantity.
How to Assess It
- Give students 14 counters and ask them to count, write the numeral, draw the set, and compare it with 17 using greater than or less than words.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs numeral cards and counters, then have them build each quantity and place the cards in order on a floor number line.
Show two dot cards and ask, “Which set has more, and how do you know?” Students explain with pictures or words.
Play Number Match Memory using pairs of cards, one showing a numeral and the other showing a matching ten-frame or dot set.
Set up a classroom store where students count up to 20 items, label each amount, and compare two shopping baskets.
