Expectations in This Standard
K.NR.1 is a Georgia mathematics standard. These are the expectations under it.
- K.NR.1.1
Count up to 20 objects in a variety of structured arrangements and up to 10 objects in a scattered arrangement.
- K.NR.1.2
When counting objects, explain that the last number counted represents the total quantity in a set (cardinality), regardless of the arrangement and order.
- K.NR.1.3
Given a number from 1-20, identify the number that is one more or one less.
- K.NR.1.4
Identify pennies, nickels, and dimes and know their name and value.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students count groups of up to 20 objects, touching or moving each object once. They match each group to a numeral and explain that the final number said gives the total.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student counts up to 20 objects once each and names the total without recounting. The student matches the set to the correct numeral and explains that the final count tells how many.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may skip objects, count one object twice, or say number words out of order. Some recount the set when asked how many because they do not yet connect the final number word to the total.
How to Assess It
- Give each student 14 counters and ask, “How many counters are there, and how do you know?” Check for one-to-one counting and a stated total of 14.

Ways to Teach It
Give students numeral cards and counters, then have them build a set that matches each card and state the total.
Show 16 dots and ask, “How can you count these accurately, and what does the last number tell you?”
Play Count and Cover, where students count pictured objects and cover the matching numeral on a game board.
Have students count classroom supplies needed for a table, then choose the numeral label that shows the total.
