What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine how numbers change from one term to the next. They use addition or subtraction to continue and create patterns with numbers no greater than 20.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can continue patterns such as 3, 7, 11, 15 by adding 4 each time. The student can state the rule, check each step, and create both increasing and decreasing patterns.

Common Misconceptions

Students may focus only on whether numbers rise or fall and miss the amount of change. They may switch operations, count incorrectly, or assume every pattern changes by 1.

How to Assess It

Give students 18, 15, 12, __, __. Ask them to fill the blanks, name the rule, and create a new pattern using the same rule.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build cube towers with 2, 5, 8, and 11 cubes, then build the next two towers and state the rule.

  2. Show 16, 12, 8, 4 and ask students to write how each term changes and explain what comes next.

  3. Play Pattern Match by pairing sequence cards with rule cards such as add 3 or subtract 2, then have partners verify each match.

  4. Use a classroom countdown, such as 20 days to an event, and list how the number shrinks by 1 each day.
