Georgia K.NR.1.2

MathKindergartenNumerical Reasoning

The Standard

When counting objects, explain that the last number counted represents the total quantity in a set (cardinality), regardless of the arrangement and order.

Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Demonstrate and explain the relationship between numbers and quantities up to 20; connect counting to cardinality (the last number counted represents the total quantity in a set).

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students count up to 20 objects, matching one number word to each object. They use the final number said to tell how many objects are in the whole set. They explain that changing the arrangement or counting order does not change the quantity.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student accurately counts as many as 20 objects and gives the final counting number as the total. After the objects are rearranged, the student says the quantity stays the same and explains why.

Common Misconceptions

Students may skip objects or count one object twice. They may give a total that differs from the final number said. Some think spreading objects apart changes how many there are.

How to Assess It

Place 12 counters in a row. Ask, “How many are there, how does your final counting number help, and will the total change if I rearrange them?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students 15 buttons to count, then rearrange the buttons and ask them to state the total without adding or removing any.

  2. Show 10 dots in a line and a circle, then ask, “Does the arrangement change the total? Explain your answer.”

  3. Play Count and Cover: students draw a numeral card, count that many cubes, and say the final counting number as their total.

  4. Count 12 classroom items, such as crayons or cups, then spread them out and decide whether the quantity changed.
