Given a number from 1-20, identify the number that is one more or one less.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name the number that comes one step after or one step before a given number. They connect that change to adding one object or taking one object away.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can quickly name the number before and after any given number in the range. The student can prove the answer by adding or removing one object.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count the given number again instead of moving one step forward or backward. They may also switch the meanings of more and less or rely on numeral shape rather than number order.
How to Assess It
- Show the number 14 and ask, “What number is one more? What number is one less?” Have students explain using counters or a number line.

Ways to Teach It
Give students counters and number cards, then have them build each amount, add or remove one counter, and name the new total.
Show 12 dots and ask, “What changes when I add one dot or cover one dot?”
Students draw a number card, say one more and one less, then check both answers on a number line.
Set 8 plates for a pretend picnic, then ask students how many plates there would be with one more or one less guest.
