Expectations in This Standard
6.PAR.6 is a Georgia mathematics standard. These are the expectations under it.
- 6.PAR.6.1
Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving rational bases and whole-number exponents.
- 6.PAR.6.2
Determine greatest common factors and least common multiples using a variety of strategies to make sense of applicable problems.
- 6.PAR.6.3
Write and read expressions that represent operations with numbers and variables in realistic situations.
- 6.PAR.6.4
Evaluate expressions when given values for the variables, including expressions that arise in everyday situations.
- 6.PAR.6.5
Apply the properties of operations to identify and generate equivalent expressions.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn real situations into numerical or algebraic expressions using variables and operations. They evaluate expressions by substituting values and following order of operations. They explain what the expression and its value mean in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a variable, write an expression that matches a situation, and identify what each part represents. They substitute a given value and calculate accurately using order of operations. They explain the result with units and context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat an expression like an equation and try to solve it. They may ignore order of operations, confuse 3x with 3 + x, or substitute incorrectly. Some can calculate a value but cannot explain what it means in the situation.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A skating rink charges $8 admission plus $3 per hour. Write an expression for h hours, evaluate it for 4 hours, and explain the result.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs cups and counters to build 3x + 5, then have them label the variable, coefficient, term, and constant.
Ask students to explain how 4n + 7 and 4(n + 7) describe different costs in a ticket-buying situation.
Make card sets with situations, expressions, and evaluated values, then have teams race to create matching groups.
Use a phone plan with a monthly fee and per-gigabyte charge, then have students write and evaluate an expression for their own data use.
